Along with Pokémon: The Indigo League, Sailor Moon was one of my favorite anime from when I was a child (I even used to ask my parents to wake me up early before school so I could catch episodes that aired as early as 6:00 in the morning 😴) I remember wanting to be friends with Usagi/Serena, wanting a pet cat that could talk, wanting to BE Tuxedo Mask; I remember being intimidated by Sailors Mars and Jupiter and later realizing that I had immense crushes on both of them 😳 As I've grown older, though, the appeal of Sailor Moon has become more nostalgic than compelling: while any form of colorful animation might have been enough for me as a child to take interest in a piece of media, try as I might, I just can't get dedicate myself to the hundreds of pulpy Sailor Moon episodes that have released since I quit viewing. Despite this, Sailor Moon remains an omnipresent source of artistic inspiration for me to this day: the character designs are gorgeous, the sets and background illustrations are timelier than ever, all the punchlines still land, the opening theme song is a certifiable bop... I could go on. Hmm, Maybe it's time I give Sailor Moon another chance? 🤔
